Most spiders build webs to trap other insects.But the trap-door spider has another way of hunting.First,she digs a hole about ten inches deep and an inch and a half wide.Next,she makes a lid of dirt and webbing.This trap door must fit over the upper end of the hole like a cover fits in a bottle.Finally,the spider hides her nest by spreading dirt over the lid.Then the trap door looks like the earth around it.Sometimes she even plants small green plants on top.She is as sly as a fox.

The trap-door spider hunts at night.For hours,she stays hidden right below her door.She holds it open just a narrow space as she waits for insects.

When something comes near her door,she can sense the movements above her nest.She pushes the lid open quickly.But the trap door is so strong that she could be locked out.So she leaves her hind legs and a part of her body under the open lid.Then the spider grabs the surprised insect in her mouth.Down they go into her nest!The trap-door spider does not need a web.
